ASF Airplane Paint Design Contest

Design the paint scheme for the ABS A36

Show off your artistic side! Encourage your flying companion, kids and grandkids to participate!

Thanks to a dedicated gift from the estate of ABS member Dick Swenson, the ABS Air Safety Foundation has acquired a 1981 A36 for use in pilot, mechanic and flight instructor education as well as ABS member recruitment and staff transportation. We need your help to make our Bonanza distinctive and a worthy representative of the American Bonanza Society. Enter the ASF Airplane Paint Design Contest.

It’s easy:

  1. Download a copy of the top and side views below, or make a copy of the design template from the January 2017 ABS Magazine. There' a copy of the ABS logo linked below as well.
  2. Sketch out your ideas, It’s okay to freehand in crayon, colored pencil, or electronically—give us your general idea and we’ll have the winning design digitized.
  3. Send a color scan of your entry to Or mail it to P.O. Box 12888 Wichita, Kansas 67277.

Make as many entries as you like. Don’t forget to provide your name, email address and phone number on the form.

Scheme Designers, Inc. has generously offered to take your ideas and turn them into a detailed template for painting the ASF A36. Craig Barnett, CEO of Scheme Designers, says: “I am excited to be involved in this design competition and look forward to seeing interesting and diverse ideas from people around the world.”

Here are some things to consider as you create your ABS Air Safety Foundation A36 design:

  • The registration will be N504SJ, commemorating ABS’ 50th anniversary in 2017 and “for” BPPP founder Sam James. The registration must meet all FAA requirements for style and size.
  • The paint scheme should be distinctive without being outlandish.
  • Incorporate the ABS colors of red and black, but you are not limited to these colors.
  • The ABS logo and “” should appear prominently on your design.
  • The design must leave room to accommodate sponsors who contribute equipment and/or financially to the ASF airplane.

The winning designer(s) will receive:

  • One fully paid registration to the ABS 50th Anniversary Convention in Wichita September 21-24.
  • A framed copy of a picture we’ll take of the winner with the airplane at the Convention.
  • Recognition in ABS media.
  • Commemoration with a placard in the airplane stating “Paint Design by (Name).”

Enter now! Entries must be received by February 1, 2017. A team of ABS members and Scheme Designers will select and announce the winner by March 1st.
