Converting a V35TC to an IO-550

I am looking at purchasing a 1967 V35TC with a timed out TSIO-520. I am considering my options for engine overhaul/replacement. Is it possible to replace the TSIO-520-D which is currently in the plane with an IO-550?

I know this has been done in the past. The TC engine was installed at the factory under an STC.
The basic aircraft and engine compartment is the same so the IO550 should fit fine. It will require replacement of the exhaust system completely due to the different configuration.
You might want to weigh that into the mix when making the decision whether to switch cost wise.
There will also be some minor wiring changes and other minor changes.

As Bob said, the conversion should be fairly simple, however, the basic replacement would be to an IO-520, not a 550. To go to the 550, you would need an STC as that is a major alteration from the 520.

D'Shannon has an STC for an IO-550 up through the V35B, so this might help you.

33 thru F33, H35 thru P35, STC kit,or installation at D'Shannon.
C33A, E33A, E33C, F33A, F33C, G33, S35 thru V35B, 36 and A36, STC kit,or installation at D'Shannon.

I fly a V35TC and am very happy with it. I will be faced with a timed out engine eventually. What is the motivation to loose the TC? What is the benefit to go the route of the STC’d 550?
