Debonair Flame cone backwards?

Helping an A&P do annual on a Debonair, noticed the right side muffler missing flame cone. Ordered a new muffler from A Well Industry known shop. Installed new muffler. Looked up into tail pipe and then noticed the the flame cone is reversed from what is normally seen, the cone is pointing up toward the manifold, opposite what is normal - pointing down toward tail pipe. (The photos show the flange end that fastens to the manifold has the flame cone pointing at it). We surmised that it was assembled wrongly at the shop. The well known shop says it’s OK. We worry that at every inspection will look up into the tail pipe and say the is flame cone is wrong and needs replaced. What to do?

I am talking with Textron to confirm the correct installation of the flame cones. When I get a drawing I will talk with the shop.

Here is the drawing to show your mechanic and AWI. This is for the 701-20 and the 701-19 is the same.

Can I conclude from this drawing that the flame cone is indeed installed incorrectly and needs replaced by one that is in the proper direction?

Yes, they need to either correct the one you have, or cross ship you another one that is correct. That orientation would most likely alter the flow characteristics of your exhaust, and not in a good way. My belief is you will have substantial back pressure that the exhaust, nor engine, are designed to operate with.

So to close the loop on this issue, it seems the early Debonair with the IO 470 engine uses right side muffler part no. 189. This part has the flame cone reversed. Who knew?
