Using Supplemental Oxygen

Course Description

The use of supplemental oxygen in the cockpit is generally not discussed in flight training except for the memorization of FAR Part 91.211. Oxygen usage is generally associated with high performance, turbocharged aircraft flying in the mid-teens to flight levels. Because of this, for most general aviation pilots the use of oxygen can be mysterious. But stories of hypoxia, loss of consciousness, and the insidious effects of oxygen deprivation, either from accident reports or experiencing the effects of hypoxia in a controlled environment like the FAA PROTE (Portable Reduced Oxygen Training Enclosure), are plentiful.

This seminar will review:

  • Use of supplemental oxygen;
  • The physiological aspects of hypoxia, and how to detect it in flight; and
  • Why supplemental oxygen use can enhance safety by increasing awareness, reducing fatigue, and eliminating that “wiped out” feeling you might get after a flight. 

Presenter

Scott Ashton is a FAASTeam Representative, ATP, CFI/CFII with ratings in airplanes, helicopters and gliders. He is President and CEO of Aerox Aviation Oxygen Systems, LLC, a Florida-based manufacturer of certified aviation oxygen systems. He owns and operates a Mooney 201.

Mr. Ashton is President of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1067 based in Naples, and is a board member of PALS SkyHope, a volunteer pilot organization that arranges free, private air transportation for individuals requiring medical diagnosis, treatment or follow-up, and for humanitarian purposes.  He has a long history of industry advocacy, having served in officer roles of CT Business Aviation Group, Friends of East Hampton Airport, Eastern Region Helicopter Council, New England Air Museum, and CT Soaring Association.
